International Driving Permit (IDP)

International Driving License / Permit is a document prescribed in Geneva convention 1949 on Road and Motor Transport.

Planning to rent a car and venture out into the world on wheel, AAUI recommends possession of an International Driving Permit before you leave for foreign destination.

Your IDP is your passport to drive in 150 countries worldwide besides possession of IDP gives you peace of mind while you are out exploring exotic tourist destinations in the world that make memories to last a lifetime.

AAUI is one of the Five Automobile Associations in India recognized under UN Convention to issue IDPs to its members.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) Recognized internationally, allows the holder to drive any private motor vehicle when accompanied by a valid Indian Driving License on foreign roads.

How do I apply?
  • AAUI members can apply/obtain IDP from the Association at New Delhi.
  • Applicant on the prescribed form in duplicate available on site and in the AAUI office.
  • For Documents required with application are:
    • Four latest passport size photograph- singed on the reverse
    • Two Photocopies of Passport alongwith original
    • Original driving licence with two photocopies
    • Medical certificate on the prescribed form (available on site /AAUI counters)
    • Two photocopies of valid visa.
    • Applicant has to come to AAUI office in person for a brief interaction relating to International Road Signs.

IDP is required and recognized internationally to allow you to drive a vehicle without any hassles.
No, you have to possess a valid IDP also both the documents together are mandatory.
The IDP is Valid for one year from date of Issue subject to validity of passport and Indian driving license.
Applications complete in all respects and submitted before 12 noon on any working day, the IDP is ready for collection at 4:00 PM same day.(Except Saturdays)

  • It is mandatory to have Valid Indian driving license along with International Driving Permit when hiring a car overseas. We understand some of the car rental companies do not insist on IDP requirements but if driver is involved in any mishap or violation , Indian driving license will not be recognised. Please see the second top line carefully printed on your Indian Driving License which stipulates 'Licence to Drive Vehicles Throughout India'
  • Always important to check that the information printed on your IDP is correct. If you need to make any changes to it, consult the AAUI for authentication and corrections.
  • IDP Application from can only be completed and signed by the applicant himself.
